Sensor networks
Wireless sensor and actuator networks provide the means to observe, understand and control the natural environment to a level that has never previously been possible.
The autonomous spatial management of animals via sensor and actuator networks was successfully trialed in 2007 with the next phase of work addressing issues of scalability as well as exploit information about the state of the herd, rather than making all decisions at an individual animal level.
Saltwater intrusion monitoring has been developed and deployed to monitor bores in the Burdekin region. Each node of the network measures the volume and rate of water being pumped, the ground-water depth and the salinity of the water being pumped. The network has demonstrated the feasibility of using sensors networks in these types of applications and can be used as a test bed for further work in the use of sensor network for water management.
